My name is Andy Birchwood.
I am a digital product designer, UI designer and design strategist.
I think we are building sandcastles.
It's my ambition to build something lasting

My career started around the millennium
I wondered why Britain celebrated the millennium by building a tent
I think they should have moved a giant rock from Scotland to London
Something to wonder at for another thousand years

Technology is ephemeral, and profits are measured annually
we aren't motivated to build experiences that last
but there are ways to make digital products robust
design is the antithesis of entropy

Design isn't just about style and surface
a digital product that is beautiful on the inside
Will grow in ways you never expect
So I take pride in my hidden deliverables

Aesthetically you'll find me in the gaps between things
I am attracted to clean, minimal design, where the whitespace speaks loudest
I'm seduced by the semantics of a well designed IA
and I love exploring synaesthesia, one sensation expressed in another

Good designers know their tools
Great designers know their materials
The best designers know they know nothing

Making an interface sing in tune with a technology stack is hard
making the tune catchy is virtually impossible
the best tunes are covered a thousand times over and echo through generations
And that's why It's my ambition to build something lasting
